1. Place Mail on Hold

Depending on how long you will be away from home, placing a temporary hold on your mail is recommended. When the mail piles up, intruders will notice that nobody has been home for a few days making it easier for them to strike. If placing your mail on hold isn’t an option, try entrusting a family member or a neighbor to pick up your newspapers and mail, and to watch your home for any signs of suspicious activity.

2. Lock Up & Leave the Lights On

This might seem obvious; however, most burglars enter a home through an unlocked window or an unlocked door. Check with your alarm company to see if they sell smart locks and smart lights that integrate with your alarm system. Simple automation and integration can help you set a schedule to where your lights come on automatically every night at a certain time. In addition, you can login to your alarm app to make sure all doors are locked.

3. Limit Social Media Activity

As hard as it might be to limit social media activity, resist the urge to broadcast to the whole world that you are not home. Twitter and Facebook are often used to find out personal information about someone, including their whereabouts. If you must share your location or family photos, make sure your profile is on private.

4. Activate Your Alarm System

Again, this tip is obvious, but most people are so distracted from trying to remember if they have packed everything that they forget to arm their alarm system. If you have an app, program the alarm system to arm once you have left your home. Make sure to contact your alarm monitoring company to let them know you’ll be out of town so if any alarms are set off, they’ll know the appropriate course of action to take.

Of course, all of these tips are just preventatives to keeping your home safe if you are traveling during the holiday season. Sometimes, taking all of the necessary tips are not enough to keep an intruder out; however, by following these 4 tips, it will make it more difficult for the burglars to do a lot of damage.
